Château Garden Atelier

Garden & courtyard design for Champagne châteaux

Gardens composed with the grace of the great Champagne houses.

In the heart of the Champagne country, where chalk soils, sculpted vineyards, and centuries-old châteaux define the landscape, we design gardens and courtyards that feel inseparable from the estates they belong to. Our atelier shapes ornamental grounds, entrance courts, and quiet green rooms for the great houses of the region, translating the elegance of the cellar and the façade into living, seasonal form.

From the first survey of a walled courtyard to the final placement of a clipped hornbeam, we work with patience, restraint, and deep respect for heritage. Every parterre, gravel walk, and reflecting basin is composed to complement the architecture, honour the terroir, and welcome guests with the same generosity found in a fine cuvée. The result is a setting that carries the character of Champagne into every path, border, and courtyard corner.

Why estates choose our atelier

A garden practice shaped by heritage, terroir, and quiet excellence.

Château-Grade Horticultural Craft

Our work is measured against the standard of the great houses, where nothing is left approximate. We select cultivars for their behaviour across the Champagne seasons, train hedges and topiary by hand, and refine soil structure over the chalk subsoil so that every planting matures with poise. Master gardeners and estate specialists compose borders that hold their form in winter and glow in high summer, ensuring the grounds photograph beautifully and feel considered from every terrace, window, and approach. This is horticulture practised as a fine craft rather than a routine service.

Heritage-Sensitive Courtyard Design

A château courtyard carries the memory of centuries, and our designs are built to honour it. We study the proportions of the façade, the rhythm of the windows, and the historic materials underfoot before proposing a single line. New parterres, gravel courts, and stone edges are drawn to sit naturally within the architecture rather than compete with it, respecting listed features and long-standing sightlines. The outcome feels as though it has always belonged to the estate, quietly enhancing the arrival experience for guests, private owners, and visitors received for tastings and events.

Terroir-Led Planting Philosophy

The same terroir that gives Champagne its finesse guides how we plant. We read the chalk, the drainage, the exposure, and the microclimate of each walled garden, then choose species that thrive with minimal strain on the land. Drought-aware perennials, regional roses, fruiting espaliers, and structural evergreens are combined so the garden remains generous through the growing year while asking less of water and intervention. By working with the soil rather than against it, we create grounds that age gracefully, support estate biodiversity, and echo the agricultural spirit of the vineyards around them.

Seasonal Estate Maintenance

A designed garden only keeps its elegance through disciplined seasonal care, and we plan for the long term from the outset. Our maintenance programmes cover pruning calendars, feeding regimes, lawn and gravel upkeep, and the careful renewal of borders as plants mature. Teams visit on a considered rhythm so hedges stay crisp, fountains run clear, and courtyards remain immaculate for the estate's own calendar of harvests, receptions, and quiet months. Owners receive clear reporting and a single point of contact, allowing the grounds to remain effortlessly presentable without demanding their daily attention.

Event-Ready Garden Staging

Champagne estates receive guests for tastings, dinners, and celebrations, and their gardens must perform on the day. We design grounds that stage beautifully for hospitality, with sightlines for arrival, sheltered corners for aperitifs, and lawns that carry a marquee or a long table with ease. Ahead of important dates we refine the planting, groom the gravel, and light the courtyards so the setting looks its finest under evening skies. This event awareness is woven into the design itself, sparing hosts last-minute effort and ensuring every occasion feels composed, gracious, and unmistakably of the region.

Discreet Full-Service Management

Estate projects demand coordination, and we carry that weight so owners do not have to. From survey and design through sourcing, planting, and stonework, a single studio oversees the whole undertaking with discretion and precision. We manage specialist trades, protect the privacy of the household, and keep the site orderly throughout, respecting the working rhythm of a château that may be producing and receiving at the same time. Clear timelines, transparent budgets, and calm communication mean the transformation of the grounds unfolds smoothly, with the finished garden delivered to the standard the house expects.

About the atelier

A studio devoted to the gardens and courts of the Champagne châteaux.

Our atelier was founded on a simple conviction: that the gardens of a wine estate deserve the same care as the wine itself. Based in the Champagne country, we work exclusively with châteaux, maisons, and vineyard properties whose grounds ask for a refined, heritage-aware hand. Every commission begins with listening, walking the land in each season, and understanding how the house lives, receives, and produces before a single plan is drawn.

The team brings together landscape designers, master gardeners, stonemasons, and horticultural specialists who share a taste for restraint and permanence. We favour classic French structure, generous seasonal planting, and materials that weather with dignity, always chosen to sit in harmony with historic architecture. Rather than imposing a signature style, we draw out the character already present in the estate, so the finished garden feels discovered rather than installed.

Because we tend many of the grounds we create, our relationships with owners endure for years. We watch our parterres fill in, our hedges thicken, and our courtyards soften with age, adjusting each garden as it matures. That long view keeps our work honest and grounded in the practical realities of estate life, and it is the reason the houses of the region trust us with their most visible and cherished outdoor spaces.

What we create

From formal parterres to living evening courtyards.

Formal Parterres & Ornamental Gardens

We design and build the structured gardens that define a great estate: box and hornbeam parterres, clipped topiary, symmetrical borders, and gravel walks framed by seasonal colour. Each composition is drawn to the scale of the château and refined until its geometry reads clearly from the terraces and upper windows. We handle setting-out, soil preparation, feature planting, and the patient training that gives formal gardens their crisp architecture, delivering grounds that carry the poise expected of a house at the heart of the Champagne region and hold their form across every season.

Courtyard & Entrance Restoration

The courtyard is where a château first speaks to its guests, and we restore these spaces with care for their history. Our work covers gravel and stone surfaces, restored edging, planted thresholds, and the discreet integration of practical needs such as access and turning space for arrivals. We match historic materials, respect listed features, and compose planting that dignifies the entrance without crowding it. The result is a court that receives visitors with quiet grandeur, framing the façade and setting the tone for the hospitality that follows within the house and its cellars.

Vineyard-Adjacent Landscape Integration

Where formal gardens meet working vines, we design the transition so estate and landscape read as one. We shape boundaries, walks, and viewpoints that lead the eye gracefully from cultivated grounds toward the surrounding rows, using native structure and regional planting to soften the join. This integration respects the agricultural life of the property while giving guests a considered route to admire the terroir. The approach keeps the garden authentic to its setting, celebrating rather than concealing the vineyards that give the estate its purpose and its place in the Champagne country.

Water Features & Fountains

Water brings movement, sound, and reflection to a formal garden, and we design basins, rills, and fountains suited to the character of each estate. From a still reflecting pool that mirrors the façade to a gentle fountain at the heart of a courtyard, every feature is engineered for reliable, quiet operation and framed with planting that completes the scene. We manage the technical elements discreetly, from circulation to winter care, so the water reads as effortless. These features become a calm focal point, cooling the air in summer and lending a timeless elegance to the grounds.

Lighting & Evening Ambience

Champagne is often enjoyed after dark, and the garden should be just as beautiful under evening light. We design discreet lighting schemes that reveal the architecture of hedges, trees, and stonework without glare, guiding guests along paths and gathering warmth into courtyards for receptions. Fixtures are concealed within the planting and controlled in gentle layers so the mood can shift from a quiet dinner to a full celebration. Thoughtful evening lighting extends the life of the garden into the night, turning terraces and courts into inviting spaces long after the sun has set over the vines.

Year-Round Estate Garden Care

A garden created to the highest standard deserves care of the same order, and our ongoing maintenance keeps the grounds immaculate through every month. Dedicated teams follow a tailored calendar of pruning, feeding, lawn and gravel work, border renewal, and feature upkeep, adjusting as the planting matures. We prepare the estate for its key dates and steward it quietly through the resting season, reporting clearly to owners throughout. This continuity protects the investment in the garden, preserves its designed intent, and ensures the château is always ready to be seen, received, and admired.
